The Southwest Archaeology Team provides a variety of opportunities for anyone interested in learning more about the cultural heritage of the Southwest. Our projects include survey, excavation, stabilization, laboratory analysis, preservation and restoration of prehistoric and historic resources. We also provide opportunities to learn about various aspects of archaeology through our numerous public programs.
LOCATIONS FOR ACTIVITIES:
- Arizona Museum of Natural History, 53 N. Macdonald St., Mesa, AZ
- Sirrine house, 160 N. Center St., Mesa, AZ
- Pueblo Grande Museum, 4619 E. Washington, Phoenix, AZ
- Mesa Grande platform mound, 10th and W. Date, Mesa, AZ
- Verdugo Stage Stop south of Coolidge in the Picacho mountains
- Toltec Arizona school house in Toltec
- Historic milk barn at the Park of the Canals on N. Horne in Mesa AZ.
PROJECT and SCHEDULES : :
Lab - artifact classification in the lab at the museum - Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m.
Meet on the east side of the museum near the museum shop gate.
This is an opportunity to learn how to identify prehistoric (and historic) artifacts.

Pueblo Grande - site stabilization - normally each third Saturday 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. till noon (depending on the weather) Sept. till May.
Enter the park through the iron gate at the far south-west corner of the museum building next to the canal.
Next work day January 21st.

Arizona Museum of Natural History - Exhibit work is normally scheduled 9:am - 3:pm on Mondays.

Verdugo ranch stage stop - Stabilization on the nineteenth century adobe
stage stop and school house buildings near Picacho Peak is complete.
We will visit Verdugo several times per year in order to monitor the site.

Historic school house restoration in Toltec. Schedules and type of work are varied.
This project is intended to help the Toltec Historical Society and Dick Meyers with their school site.

- Monday mornings exhibit work at the museum - 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
- Tentative plans for a maintenance day at Verdugo in March or April >
